Univ.-Prof. Dr. Ayse Caglar
Ayse Çaglar is Professor of Social and Cultural Anthropology at the Department of Social and Cultural Anthropology. She is also Permanent Fellow at IWM (Institut für die Wissenschaft des Menschen) where she is building a research focus on „Migrants in City-Making and Urban Politics“, which will be connected to the activities of this Research Platform easing the scholarly exchange at international level. Her major expertise on migration and multi-scalarity is interdisciplinary in itself and will allow to investigate how migration and migrants are integral to the formation of the urban space, the boundaries of citizenship over time and the making and re-making of cities. Her theoretical and empirical track record in the study of globalization and transnationalisation processes, transformations of nation states and changing property relations, migration and urban restructuring will contribute to the development of an interpretative frame of how the challenges and their specific trends underlying this platform are going to shape urban futures and society. Her methodological expertise in ethnography will help exploring in-depth the interplay of cultural dynamics and structural constraints in shaping urban space.
